BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) - Hyatt, Marriott, and Hilton are all developing hotels in Bakersfield, bringing a grand total of 558 rooms to welcome visitors to Bakersfield.
Within the next 14 months, a new 123-room Residence Inn by Marriott will open along Cappuccino Way and Coffee Road in northwest Bakersfield.
"We thought, why not bring an upper scale, extended-stay hotel in the market where it's definitely needed," Raju Verma, president of Prime Hospitality LLC, said.
Marriott approached Verma about opening a new extended stay hotel in Bakersfield for visitors booking longer stays.
"There are some weekends in Bakersfield where we are sold out," David Lyman, manager of Visit Bakersfield, said.
As Bakersfield diversifies its economy, it's luring more business travelers to town.
"It could be oil companies, it could be traveling nurses, it could be doctors," Verma said.
These hotels come with kitchens so guests staying for a lengthy period of time can cook meals and keep perishables fresh. The Residence Inn even offers to do the grocery shopping for guests.
A Hyatt Place and Homewood Suite Hotel are also underway in Bakersfield, generating over 100 jobs and tax revenue for the city.
"That's a big plus for Bakersfield," Lyman said.
